Locked Residence Halls

All residence halls are locked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

The following sign is posted on the doors of all buildings that have summer residential programs:

For the Safety and Security of our Residents and Staff, all Residence Hall Doors are locked.

Access is restricted to summer program participants and authorized staff.

Please follow instructions located near the red phone on the outside of the building.

This means that you will need to make access plans for your group on their arrival day and make provisions for late arrivals. You may want to have a “greeter” at the front door to welcome and direct your group.

Please prepare for both arrival and departure days.

It is your responsibility to make these arrangements. University Housing Conference Coordinators and Department of Public Safety personnel will not be available to monitor the doors. The University Housing Conference Coordinator may be able to help you arrange building access for your “greeter” staff.

Visitor Identification

All visitors must have approved identification to enter the residence hall. If Department of Public Safety personnel encounter persons without proper identification, they will question their presence in the residence hall and may ask them to leave.

Check In

Monitoring door access for check-ins is the responsibility of program organizers unless other arrangements have been made with University Housing. Provisions for access must be made for early or late arrivals.

Returning to the Residence Hall During the Day

Program organizers must make arrangements for supervision of participants who have reason to return to the residence hall during the day.

Commuters who have meals or attend program-sponsored events or activities in the residence hall must wear adhesive badges. [link to Non-Residential Participant and Visitor Identification]

Instruct participants to use only the designated entrance. In most cases, this is the door at the front of the building. Check with the University Housing Conference Coordinator assigned to your group for this information.

Participants are not permitted to return to the residence hall without an escort. The front desk staff cannot open the door for individuals who do not have an access card. Arrangements must be made to call summer program in-house staff to open the door.

Residence Hall Security

Department of Public Safety (DPS) personnel patrol the residence halls to monitor activities and to respond to emergency calls. They check exterior doors but do not monitor the doors for visitor access.

At night, Security personnel are on duty in the building to provide security coverage and respond to emergencies. DPS also provides mobile patrols throughout the night.
