Dispensing Medication

In order to comply with applicable law, Risk Management and General Counsel have determined that strict guidelines must be followed for dispensing medication to campers.

Medication Authorization

Authorization to dispense medication must be given by the parents or guardians. Information must include:

  • The name of the medication.
  • The dosage of the medication.

The name and telephone number of the prescribing physician.
The telephone number of the physician must be on record.

Campers Without Medication Authorization

In the event that a participant reports to camp with prescribed medication but without the proper documentation, follow this procedure:

1.  Remove the medication from the camper and place it in a secure location.

2.  Contact the camper’s parent or guardian to obtain proper documentation. A faxed authorization is acceptable.

3.  If the parent or guardian cannot be reached, every attempt should be made to contact the prescribing physician for instructions regarding immediacy of need, complications or risks associated with not administering medication, etc.

4.  If the prescribing medication cannot be identified or contacted, or if the physician is reached and feels that the medication is necessary but parental consent cannot be obtained, refer the camper to a licensed medical facility (hospital or clinic) to dispense the medication.

5.  Costs for medical treatment are the responsibility of the parents or guardians of the camper.

Procedures for Dispensing Medication

1.   Medication must be kept in a secure environment, under the control and directions of a designated adult.

2.   To ensure control of medication, limit the number of adults authorized to dispense it.

3.   Medication must be administered in compliance with the prescribing physician’s instructions.

4.   When a medication is given, the following information should be logged in a central location and be available to medical and security personnel in the event of an emergency.

  • Camper name
  • Complete name of medication
  • Dosage
  • Date each instance that it was administered
  • Time that it was administered indicating AM or PM
  • Signature or initials of the person administering the medication

Consent

Medication cannot be administered by University of Michigan Staff without appropriate parental consent.
