Safety and Security
Fire
In the event of a fire, pull the alarm and leave
the building immediately and proceed as guided by
University Staff. Establish a daytime procedure to
ensure that you can account for all participants.
Electrical Storms
During the summer, Ann Arbor may experience dangerous
electrical storms. Participants should remain indoors
and away from windows during the storm.
Power Outages
During the day, proceed to an area that has windows
– like a lounge or outside. Do not light
candles.
Tornado
A Tornado Watch means that weather conditions are favorable for a tornado to develop. A Tornado Warning means that a tornado has actually been sighted. In the event of a Warning:
- The City of Ann Arbor alarm system will emit a steady tone for three to five minutes.
- Take cover by going to ground level or below.
- Stand in an interior corridor on the lowest floors, or in the basement.
- Camp Staff will evacuate top floors.
- Stay away from windows and glass.
- Avoid large rooms with free-span roofs.
- Help others to remain calm.
- Listen to a radio for latest information and instructions.
- There will be no “all clear” alarm sounded.
Propped Doors
Propping open exterior doors is dangerous. Never prop open a door.
Campus Construction Areas
All construction areas are off limits. Do not enter any construction area.
Campus Emergency Telephones
Emergency telephones are located throughout campus and are identified by a blue light on the top of the booth. This telephone will put the caller directly in contact with the Department of Public Safety.
Red phones, located outside the residence halls, may be used to call the Department of Public Safety by dialing 3-1131 or 9-1-1.
Locking Room Doors
Room doors must be locked at all times. "At all times"
means even when a participant is in the room. If a
participant goes across the hall to visit with friends
or to takes a shower, doors must be locked.
It only takes a few seconds for a thief to enter a
room and steal property.
Keyless Lock Door Entry System
University Housing has installed keyless locks on all bathroom and room doors, which require an access keycard.
Crimes Against Property
Any theft or malicious destruction is reported to the Department of Public Safety.
Routine and Emergency Maintenance in Rooms
On occasion, University of Michigan maintenance staff must enter a room to provide routine or emergency maintenance.
Reporting Strangers in the Hall
Any time you observe someone who you believe does not belong in the hall, is behaving in a suspicious manner, or if you feel that your or another’s safety is in jeopardy, Dial 9-1-1.
Traffic
Ann Arbor streets are very busy and there are many one-way streets. Use extreme caution when crossing the street.
Locked Residence Halls
All residence halls are locked 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
For the Safety and Security of our Residents and Staff, all Residence Hall Doors are locked. Access is restricted to summer program participants and authorized staff.
(Name of Hall) Program Participants: If you require assistance, please use the red phone outside to call (Name of Hall) Camp Office (telephone number).
The following sign is posted on the doors of all buildings that have summer residential programs:
Campers are not permitted to return to the residence hall without an escort. Coaches must meet campers at the residence hall in the morning for Walk Down to the athletic site and escort them to and from meals.
Security
Department of Public Safety (DPS) personnel patrol the residence halls to monitor problems and respond to emergency calls. They check exterior doors but do not monitor the doors for visitor access.
At night, Security personnel are on duty in the building to provide security coverage and to respond to emergencies. DPS also provides mobile patrols throughout the night.
Security officers monitor the front entrance doors beginning at 5:00 PM. Entrance to the residence hall is granted only to campers with keycard holders. Campers are not to leave the residence hall unsupervised.
Parents/guardians and coaches must have written permission to take a camper out in the evening.
